Farewell My Lovely Rats

noses

It’s been a few months since my last two lovely boys passed away. It was November 26th and Dublin was getting very feeble and off his food. Jinx took a bad turn during the night, and we were very upset to find him barely moving in the morning of the 27th, so I had to make the harsh decision to put them both to sleep. I knew that Dublin would only decline very fast without his brother so I thought it was kinder to let them both go together. It was not just the end of days for these two wonderful little guys, but the end of an era, I had decided not to bring any more rats into our lives for the time being, as it is not so practical having to house them in the garden shed (a consequence of my partners allergies), not to mention the heating bill. So I will make this my last post, a farewell to my sweet pixies Dublin and Jinx, and a tribute to all our rats gone by. To the Rainbow Bridge my little ones xxxxxxxxxxxx

  4. Thankyou :) I hope you have lots of fun with your ratty family xx

  5. That looks like the most fun rat party ever!

I know they’re all having fun together and waiting for the day to see you again.

  6. Aw thanks, I would like to think so :)

  7. What a sweet, but sad entry. The only bad thing about pet rats is their short life span. I’m sure you miss them very much.

  8. I am so sorry for your loss. I must admit..I cried. I have had ferrets and currently have two dogs (my husband’s son’s and ex-wife’s dogs)!. I would love a rat of my own. Maybe it’s time I got a ratty!

    Best wishes to you.

  9. Thanks, yes that’s true, especially as they have such personality.
I have a German Shepherd now and she’s lovely, but I still miss the rats, there’s something very special about them :)

  10. Aw! It’s OK – I do miss them but I’ve got a sweet German Shepherd pup to keep me busy now.
I couldn’t recommend a better pet than a rat – but it’s best to get two of the same sex, because they’re very sociable and one might get lonely :)

  11. i love your website it very helpful. i know its hard to lose rats i lost my baby rat too, but if you miss them remember you will see them again some day:)

  12. also don’t be afraid too buy another rat. you wont be sorry

  13. please those rats out there who have bad owners need you

  14. I want to say, I know how you felt when it came to losing your rats. We lost the last of our girls (we had four) and at that point I said no more. I had started to develop allergies to them during the second year of having them, so I thought that was best. However, we finally decided to get some more, and the allergies were really difficult to deal with. However, we bought an air purifier and it’s like the rats aren’t in the room! I am glad we decided to try again, because our rats are amazing. We have ten now, 6 boys and four girls. Though, we’ve lost some already due to poor breeding from where we bought them (which is actually why we have as many as we do, just felt compelled to rescue the poor things) I am still thankful for their amazing personalities. Teaching them tricks is even fun and rewarding too. I wish you the best with your little pup, (who by now I’m sure is nothing but! lol) I enjoyed reading what I did on this site.

  15. Hello there,

I enjoyed reading all of the wonderful things that have happened in the lives of your rats. I understand that this blog may not be active… but I thought I’d give it a shot.

My two rats, Marigold and Pansy, are the loves of my life. Mari is the tamer of the two, she’s always been more on the energetic/friendly side. Pansy, on the other hand, shies away from human touch, even though I’ve had her for quite a while now.

I adopted them both when they were a few weeks old, probably about 12 w at the most. We got them from a pet store, and while no one else in my family knew what we were getting into, I had a general idea. I’d done MY research, and apparently everyone else’s as well. So, we picked the two females they had left. A small brown rat and a small cream colored rat. Both have white bellies, the darlings. But, since then, they have aged to a year and a half! Can you believe it? Time flew so quickly! I fear that they are approaching their golden years. Just recently, I had to take Mari to the vet for sudden fur loss, and discovered that she had a possible tumor growing on her mammary gland.

I know I will probably have to be letting them go soon. But I’ve read somewhere that some rats can live to be up to five years of age! However, those rats are the exception. Do you have any advice for making their elder years more enjoyable?

  16. Thanks Olivia,

I like to think my ratty days aren’t over, but it’s just not possible right now. My fiance has suffered enough with allergies to our rats!
Hopefully this website will help other rat-owners. I’m no expert, but I’ve tried to give good common sense advice, based on lots of research and my own experience.

Anyone who loves rats should try and re-educate those people around them who are ignorant about what truly amazing creatures rats are! ;)

  17. P.S. Sorry about the massive delay in replying ;)

  18. Thanks Kaiden :)

Yes it was sad at the time, but as they say, life moves on, and you never forget the little souls that flit by and illuminate your life if only for a short time :)
I’ve got pretty full hands with not one, but two German Shepherds now :) My “pup” is now two and the little one is only 4 months! I can’t imagine not having an animal. They keep you in balance.

I just want to say, Yay! Good for you for taking in all your ratties, they are obviously well-loved and cared for. I hope you have many more rat-filled days :)

  19. Hiya!

You’re in luck, I’ve haven’t visited for nearly a year and hadn’t expected any comments. So thank you! It’s always wonderful to get feedback, especially positive feedback!

Advice for making their elder years more enjoyable? Just keep doing what you’re doing, by the sounds of it :) When they’re out of the cage at “playtime” they may tire earlier than they used to, so let them go back to their cage if they want to. Some rats want more cuddles when they’re getting a bit feeble, some like to be left alone. They’re individuals like us! I’m sure you will know what to do. It’s all about watching and observing and letting them “tell” you in their own way what they like or dislike. I remember Rocky couldn’t eat the same food he used to because he had a tumour, so I had to give him soft food. I used baby food but first I checked all the ingredients were safe. My rat Shy-Shy liked his routine, especially during his last few weeks. If I didn’t appear at the normal time, he would get very agitated. But then, he was a special boy! If I sat on the chair to give him his medicine one day, the next day he would clamber onto the chair waiting for it.

I can tell by your post you obviously adore you rats, so I’m sure whatever you do will be the right thing :)

I hope you have many happy ratty days ahead :)

    Julie x
