Goodbye Shy-Shy

shyee

The last one of the infamous four. My lovely Shy-Shy has departed to the Rainbow Bridge.
We had been on holiday for a week and my neighbour had kindly fed the rats for me, including dishing out Shy-Shy’s baby food everyday. Shy-Shy had been eating okay all the time we were away, and he seemed very happy to see me. He trundled over to the edge of the cage and poked his wee nose through at me, bruxing away. Then over the next two days he just stopped eating and his breathing was very laboured. I tried to coax him to eat and he would only lick a bit of food off my finger, so I decided to take him to the vet. I’m convinced he was just waiting for me to come back.

On 13th July we all kissed him goodbye.

Here’s some memories of a very special little rat…

When Shy Shy first came to live with us he was very nervous and shy, hence his name. He was my daughter Maya’s rat and she named him.

Despite being the most bashful rat of the litter to begin with, he was the fastest to tame and was always way ahead of his brothers in many ways. He was an intelligent boy with a bit of a wild streak!

Here Shy Shy is rat-minding Dublin and Jinx. He was quite protective of them and was the most tolerant member of the group.

He had a sweet baby face even when he was getting on a bit – this is one of the last pictures taken of him.

So here’s a final picture just to show what a handsome rat Shy Shy was… A bright little star, full of personality. He will always be remembered as a special member of the family. To the Rainbow Bridge..

Today my lovely rats have been mostly eating scraps.

  1. came across your web site about a year ago & been following it ever since. love the pics, must have took hundreds of my rats over the years but even with an “all singing all dancing” camera still can’t seem to get a good shot (move to fast for my old eyes) , then again they do live up to their names, HEAV & SHIRL from eastenders.

  2. i just came across your site and would like to say sorry for the loss of Shy Shy, sitting here with my lovely Odo (male norwegian 2 years), it makes me sad to know he won’t be wih me for long. Shy Shy was very handsome.

  3. Thanks for your comment – I haven’t been on the site for ages – encourages me to do more posts!

  4. As said above, you have a great site and it’s a fantastic read. Sad to see it’s stopped here but hope you decide to continue in the future :) I must say, it’s beacuse of your site that made me choose these amazing rodents, called rats. Thankyou :)

    All the best

  5. Awww! Thanks Will. I’m really touched. I didn’t intend to stop writing on the site, it’s just that I couldn’t face it for a while after Shy-Shy died – he and his brothers were the reason I began this project, so it was too raw for a while, then I got some work doing design, and had to teach myself photoshop which took up a lot of my spare time!
I will definitely put time aside to do this, so watch out for new posts in the not too distant future! :)
