Rats Refuse Medicine

Oh dear! The rats are on a water strike. They haven’t drank any of their water since yesterday morning! They obviously object to the taste of Baytril in their beverage. I have had to call the vet and was advised to give the medicine (a different dose) to Shy-Shy straight into his mouth with a syringe. Easier said than done! In the end I opted for adding his dose to a little soft food. I used yoghurt and the little sweety licked it right off the spoon for me. It was easy and painless.

Shy-Shy eating his egg custard with medicine hidden inside.

Today my rats have been mostly eating yoghurt and banana slices.

  1. HI there! If you have any future problems again with giving them medications try it with organic baby food!!!! My rats love that stuff. Mine preferred the vegetable ones over fruits.
Sweet potato, peas, carrots ( not too much as carotene can be harmful ) are just some favorites my rats ate!!!! It’s also good to leave some in a dish at night in case they choke. It’s supposed to uncommon with rats but every single one of has choked! Anyways I hope this helps!!

  2. Thanks Krista
Since this post, I’ve had no trouble feeding the Baytril, but my older boys are now having a drug called Septrin which tastes disgusting, and it’s been a real bind, getting them to take it!
Also, I have to give them 1ml per day which is an awful lot, so I will definitely try your suggestion.

    Thanks again,
    Julie :)
